Emergency Preparedness or Just Plain Nuts?

Okay, so I haven’t written too many posts about my parents, mostly cause my mom reads my blog, but this story I just have to tell.  First, let me say that my parents are very prepared people.  For EVERYTHING.  Almost too prepared if you know what I mean.  Let me give you some examples.

Whenever there is a major natural disaster, terrorist attack or there is lots of inflation talk, my parents get on the ready.  They want to be prepared for anything that could possibly happen no matter how remote the chance of it happening is.  After 9/11 they purchased gas masks and MRE’s for the whole family – as well as hand guns for themselves.  That is just one example of their mindset.

Here’s another.   Do you remember the huge earthquake that hit San Francisco in 1989?  Well we lived in a suburb of Seattle at the time and since Seattle hasn’t had a big earthquake since the sixties the news of this natural disaster got my parents all in a tizzy.  So much so, they came up with an earthquake emergency preparedness kit.

This was no ordinary earthquake kit either.  My parents packed tons and tons of stuff into their 1973 Mercury Colony Park Station Wagon – wood paneling and all – that was on the side of our house.  Seriously, this was our Oh S**t kit!

It was filled with first aid supplies, water, canned goods, freeze dried food, clothes, blankets and even chocolate covered espresso beans.  Cause you never know when you are going to need those in an emergency right?  It was hilarious.  I made a point of showing the car to all my friends when they came over because they really had to see it to believe it.

We had that station wagon on the side of our house waiting for the inevitable earthquake that never came for three or four years. Finally my parents came to their senses and realized that an old station wagon from the seventies probably wasn’t the best the food storage option.  The canned goods were all rusty and everything ended up getting tossed in the garbage.

Thank goodness they cleared it out just in time for me use “The Beast”, our family nickname for the car, on occasion to drive to school.  The car was old but it sailed down the road like a dream and it had TEN seatbelts!  It was a party every time I drove it.  I was even able to give a cute boy from my class a ride in it because lucky for him I had the extra room.  I had no idea back then that the cute boy that crammed in with all my friends would one day become my husband.  I have to give thanks to “The Beast” for an unforgettable ride home.

Have You Heard About Lees #Carpet? #Stain Protection So Strong it Has a Life of Floor Warranty! – #Review Part 1

One of the coolest things that I saw at BlogHer 2011 was the Lees Carpet Spill Bar demonstration.  I have three extremely messy little boys so stained carpet comes with the territory.  It is one of my biggest pet peeves, and it seems that no matter what I do as soon as I turn my back the boys are busy spilling something on the carpet, yet again.  The only solution that I have come up with to try to protect the carpet is having a cheap and ugly area rug cover it.

It’s really tough when you want to have a chic and stylish home but you are forced to either live with disgusting stains or ugly area rugs.  It’s embarrassing when company visits and it makes me feel like my house guests think that I don’t care about the look and style of my home.  Which isn’t true – at all.

So when I saw what Lees carpet was all about I couldn’t believe my eyes!  It was like someone created a carpet for a mom with boys like mine!  So let me tell you just what Lees Spill Bar was all about.

Lees carpet with Evertex has stain protection so strong that no matter what is spilled it can literally be cleaned up with water and a

blotted with a cloth.  I know what you’re thinking… Say what?  It’s true.  I saw it with my own eyes.  Lee’s Spill Bar had bloggers choose from a menu of common stains that would be difficult to remove.  You know, the kind where as soon as it spills on the carpet you are freaking out that it will never come out because they are that bad.  Things like wine, chocolate sauce, coffee and more.

Once the blogger made their stain choice they were served it in a shot glass and asked to spill it on the Lees carpet sample.  The Lees rep simply took a water bottle and a cloth and the stain lifted right off of the carpet!  Once I saw this I knew that this was the carpet for me.

Check out this video of actual reactions to seeing how Lees carpet stood up to the Spill Bar – I wasn’t the only one who was amazed!

Now did you see the reactions to the bloggers that saw Lees Carpet in action?  That was me too!  It’s actually one of those thing that you need to see to believe.  If someone had told me that this carpet existed I’m not sure that I would have believed them.  The proof is in the pudding – or chocolate, wine, coffee – whatever your preferred spill is.  This carpet is definitely something to write home about!  At least that’s how I felt when I left BlogHer 2011.

Not only do I see value in the amazing Lees Carpet from a mom’s point of view but from the stand point of a landlord as well.  When we moved out of our home last January the stains in the family room carpet were a definite eye sore.  With all the furniture gone there was no way to hide it.  So I did what I could and paid a professional carpet cleaning service to come out and treat the stained areas.  $300 later the stains were faded but definitely still there.

As we began showing our home to prospective renters I saw the look on their face as they walked in the family room and stains were staring them right in the face.  I offered each prospective tenant a credit on their first month’s rent to go towards purchasing an area rug, or rugs, to cover the stains.

Seeing how well Lees Carpets worked to fight stains I would definitely consider replacing the existing carpet in my rental home with Lees.  I think that it would provide peace of mind not only for myself as a landlord but for my tenants as well.  I know as a renter myself, I am so worried about the boys damaging the carpet.  There is all ready one McDonald’s chocolate milk stain that just won’t budge.

Lees Area Rug Review – Part #1

When I found out that I would be reviewing a Lees Carpet area rug I was SO excited!  First of all, beyond the fact that its Lees, I was so happy to be able to have a stylish and FUNCTIONAL area rug.  One that would protect my carpet where the boys spill the most.  And best of all, I was going to be able to ditch the ugly cheap area rug with a gorgeous, stain fighting rug.

In part one of the review I want to share my before and after photos with you of my family room – the room that receives the most action in the house.

Family Room before Lees Carpet Area Rug

As you can see the carpet in the home is a very light beige.  It’s a short shag with flecks of grey here and there but it definitely doesn’t hide stains.  The area rug in the picture is a cheap $30 one that I purchased at Home Depot.  It’s not comfy at all.  Very thin and it reminds me of what you find in an office.  It’s not big enough to go the full length of our sofa either.  I placed it here because my boys like to eat on the sofa and lots of spills occur in this general area.

Picking Out A Lees Carpet Style and Color

I was really excited to pick out my new area rug.  Lees Carpet is available at Carpet One Floor & Home.  I was able to browse all the carpet colors and styles from their website.

I knew that I wanted to go with a medium to dark brown color and also have some type of textured design.  I wanted the different texture because seeing as this is an area rug I wanted it to stand out a bit with a design even if the carpet was the same color.  There are SO many browns to choose from!  My husband and I went back and forth for a few days trying to decide which one we liked best.

One thing that I really liked about the Carpet One website is the option to see the details in every color and style that they have to offer.  First you click on the carpet style.  Once that window comes up you then select from the different color options available for that style.  The carpet style and color is displayed in a box on the screen that you can zoom in and out of.  One thing that really made it nice to imagine how the carpet looks is that they have an object placed on the carpet so you can see the difference between the carpet and the object as you zoom in and out.  This was a really helpful too in my opinion.

Decisions, Decisions

The little ones are helping Daddy roll out the new rug!

Finally we settled on the style Montelle and the color we chose was Incense.  It was such a hard decision but we finally went with a shade of brown that wasn’t too dark so it complemented our furniture better.  Montelle has a great pattern that I loved and I couldn’t wait to see it in person!

The day that the carpet came I was so excited!  The rug was rolled up tight and covered in plastic to keep it safe during the delivery process.  We wai

ted until the weekend to get the new Lees Carpet rolled out.  It was a family affair, as the little boys loved helping Daddy unroll the new area rug and put it in place.

Check Out Our New Lees Carpet Area Rug

Here is the after picture of our new and improved family room!  I am So happy with how the carpet looks now.

After Picture of our Family Room with Lees Carpet Area Rug

I was really impressed with how gorgeous this pattern looks!  The pattern makes it look as if the rug is made up of two different colors which is exactly the added texture that I was looking for.  It is plush and soft – a real treat for your feet!  No more thin, ugly area rug for our family!  This is one of those rugs that just screams quality when you look at it.  You don’t have to be a carpet expert to know that this is a great carpet.

Below is a picture of the Montelle pattern up close.  It really looks like two different colors in the pictures but honestly the carpet is the same color but the pattern height is a little bit longer than the pile on the rest of the rug.  With the shadow and light in the camera lens it gives the illusion of two different colors in the picture.  I love that the pattern is bold yet subtle all at once.

I am SO happy with Lees so far.  The comfort and style of the carpet is important but I wonder how it will hold up to the wear and tear of my three little boys.  That is the true test!  I know that it won’t be long until the carpet is covered in crumbs, milk and whatever else they get their hands on.

Once I have had some time for my boys to wear in the carpet I will be posting the second half of my review.  I’ll let you know how well the carpet really repels stains and if blotting with water really will get a stain out.  Or a mushed in fruit snack…. Stay tuned…

So tell me, do you think that you could use Lees Carpet in your home?

Smart Thinking LifeStyle Tips for the Home

As a busy mom I know just how hard it is to keep up with all the stuff that gets thrown my way on a daily basis.  Between the duties of wife, mother and blogger – just to name a few – I know that keeping things straight some days seems darn near impossible.  I have learned that with just a few simple adjustments to how I organize my life and home can make all the difference.  Here are some of my smart thinking lifestyle tips that keep me on task and my head above water on a regular basis (as much as possible that is!).

  • Don’t let things pile up.  This is one of my biggest problems if I don’t keep up with all the stuff that floods through my door on a daily basis.  A great rule that I learned several years back is that as soon as something comes to me, or my kids for that matter, put it where it belongs.  If I don’t abide by this rule I find that my sons’ schoolwork, my husband’s work related papers, the mail and other miscellaneous stuff starts piling up on the kitchen counters and beyond.  For the school work I have bins assigned for each of my children and I keep just the best pieces of work that year.  My husband’s work goes to his nightstand – that’s his mess, not mine!  And I try to find a home for all the other stuff that makes it way to the counter.  It’s so nice to have things put away and I love seeing a CLEAN counter.
  • Scan important documents.  If you scan all the important documents you have, like bills, receipts or other like items, you can then shred and recycle them.  Many companies provide copies of statements online and you can save a copy in file if need be instead of scanning.  Just remember to keep all scanned items on an external hard drive that way if your computer crashes your important documents will be safe!
  • Make Lists.  I am a list lover!  I have a list for all important tasks so I don’t forget a step.  If I know that an event is coming up I write a list of what I need and when I need it by.  I do the same for packing for trips – even small day trips.  I live in a small town and if I’m going to the mall or a Target I have learned to make a list because I usually have about an hour drive and once I head out there isn’t time to turn back.  Lists can save time and money!
  • Utilize your smart phone.  I use my smart phone or iPod whenever I can if it will help me with a daily task – or make an otherwise boring task fun!  There are so many apps out there you just have to find the ones that suit you and make your life easier.  For example, some apps I employ are grocery lists that I can send to my husbands phone, twitter and facebook to connect with friends, email so I never miss an email even when I’m on the go, Google maps, calorie counters, barcode scanners for comparison shopping, memos and calendars – all of these and more help to keep my life running smoothly.  I think most of us agree that we always have our phones on us so it makes sense to put it to work for us right?
  • Take advantage of every space that your home has to offer.  Make your home work for you.  I recently downsized to a smaller home and with that I have had to learn to utilize every nook and cranny of this house to accommodate my big life.  Whether its creating a home office, play space or adding pantry space to the kitchen it’s possible to improve any area to make it work if you take time to reconfigure and organize the space.  Figure out what your must haves are and look for ways to make them happen.  For example I needed a home office but I don’t have the extra room.  By rearranging some furniture in my bedroom I was able to turn a small corner into an office space with a small desk and shelves – perfect for my laptop and some file storage.  It’s not ideal but it works and its way better than what I was doing which was working from my bed.
  • Ask for help!  Sometimes when I am challenged by a home or life task I call on one of my besties, or all of them, to throw out some suggestions.  As they say two heads are better than one.  They often help me think of ways to solve whatever issue I’m having.  Plus its also nice to catch up and chat for awhile too!

#HappyBirthday to Me!

Today is my 32nd birthday!  I have been enjoying my stay in Seattle this weekend with my friends and family, I couldn’t have asked for a better present.  I have loved seeing them all, I only wish that I had more time to spend with everyone.  Tonight is my last night in the Emerald City before I return home to my tiny little town in Oregon.  I will be relaxing with my husband and spending my time in our hotel room watching Desperate Housewives – uninterrupted – a gift within itself. Our hotel is awesome, and very special to us, it is where we were married just over nine years ago.  Did I mention that my father-in-law is also the Chef at the hotel so I know that chances are good I will be enjoying some super delicious room service.

I hope that you all are enjoying a great weekend.  Starting Tuesday I have tons of things in store this week.  Some great giveaways, reviews and more!  My husband is also on vacation until Saturday so I will have plenty of time to myself to blog my heart out, that’s his birthday gift to me, sweet right?

#Weightloss Update – Down 12 lbs in the Last Six Weeks!

It’s been awhile since I have done a weight loss update.  Over the last several months I have been through lots of ups and downs and I faltered here and there along the way.  I was working with Nutrisystem and all though I believe that their program works if you stick to it – the timing was off with me.  I just couldn’t stick to it during my little bout of depression that came from moving far from my friends and family.  It’s taken a bit of time but I am happy to say that I am back on track and ROCKING IT!

I am still eating some Nutrisystem meals because I really like the breakfast, lunch and snack options.  The dinners are better when you find ways to make them from scratch using the entrees ingredients.  Their frozen entrees are really delicious and I am so sad that I ran out of the Turkey Pepperoni pizzas.  They are my favorite frozen pizza option and oh SO good.  I have tons of friends that have done well on Weight Watchers using their point system.  Seeing Jennifer Hudson in those commercials is pretty damn persuasive if you ask me.  I just love her!  One of my favorite reality TV personalities, Patty Stanger the Millionaire Match Maker, lost weight using Sensa.  I have to admit that I wouldn’t mind giving Sensa a shot.  All that you do is sprinkle a little Sensa on everything that you eat and the pounds just disappear – it sounds amazing.  As for Alli, I don’t know how people do it.  The side effects sound a bit too gruesome for my tastes.  Just google it and you’ll see what I mean….  Also, you can check out Sensational.com for diet reviews.  They have just about every diet under the sun listed there and they have some cool features like a BMI and a Calorie Calculator.

There are thousands of weight loss plans and methods and the truth is, no matter what method you choose, basically it comes down to simple math.  Not my best subject that’s for sure.  To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume.  Period.  As much as I hate being a calorie counter that is what it has come down to.  I have found a sensational smartphone app that helps me get through each day called Fat Secret.  I LOVE this app!

Fat Secret has tons of great features that help me chart my weight loss success.  If you don’t have a smartphone they also have a website that you can visit and register on but since I do everything through my phone I haven’t been there.  There is a food diary, exercise diary, weight tracker, recipe index, diet calendar and more.  My very favorite aspect of this app is that when I am inputting food into my diary I can simply scan the barcode on the product and all of the nutritional information is automatically added.  Sometimes there is a hiccup and the wrong product comes up but it doesn’t happen very often.  It had no trouble when I scanned the Nutrisystem food either, which I was nervous about because its not something that is sold in stores.  When I am using ingredients that I need to search for their nutritional info I just plug them right into the search engine and the pop right up usually.  I can see the total calories consumed per meal and also the running total for the day.  The app also calculates based on my activity level, age, gender, height and weight my RDI (recommended daily intake).  My intake is always calculated with my RDI in mind.

I have been successfully using this system to track what I am eating for the last month.  I am now 12 lbs lighter due to watching my calories.  It has been easier this time around because my husband is also watching his weight as well.  All though I only track for myself I cook for both of us for lunch and dinner every day, unless we go out.  I have made many small diet changes like portion control and eating a healthy salad with most meals each night for dinner.  The operative word being healthy salads – there are some out there that are higher in calories than a steak!  Speaking of steaks, we still eat those too.  Only now we share one steak instead of each having our own.  I have become a big fan of my kitchen scale and I weigh any food that I need to.  I also use Truvia instead of sugar and it is really delicious with strawberries.  It is one of our favorite after dinner treats.

All this weight loss and I haven’t even added exercise into my daily routine yet.  I’m certain that once my activity level increases I will drop weight even faster.  I am also working on my water intake too.  Currently I live on Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry and some water in the morning. I have to say that I am really happy with the results thus far.  I am still taking baby steps towards my goal weight but 12 lbs down from where I was just six weeks ago is HUGE for me.  That averages out to be about 2 lbs per week.  Yes, I am using my awesome math skills!

I will keep the updates going until I reach my goal.  I predict that by this time next year I should be very close to it as long as I stay on track. Thanks to everyone for all of your positive words of encouragement and sharing your own personal stories with me.  I can’t tell you how great it is to have all this support as I go through this life changing process.  If you have any tips or links to awesome recipes I would love for you to share them with me.

Don’t Forget to Watch #PhineasandFerb Across the 2nd Dimension Tonight on the #DisneyChannel

Last Saturday I took my two oldest boys to the Radio Disney event at the Dimension 13 theater in Portland for the special preview screening of Phineas and Ferb Across the 2nd Dimension.  The new movie will air tonight at 8 pm on the Disney Channel so set your DVR cause you won’t want to miss it!

The movie was very cute and super hilarious for both parents and children alike.  We got to see Candace in a whole new light as well as a brief glimpse as to what Phineas and Ferb might be like if they weren’t allowed to say “I know what were going to do today”.  Plus we get tons of Heinz Doofenschmirtz and lots of Perry the Platypus action.  We also got to see Phineas and Ferb’s reaction to finding out that their beloved pet Perry was really a secret agent!

If your kids love Phineas and Ferb they will love this movie!  My boys were talking about it for days – in fact, they are still talking about it!  My husband didn’t get to see the movie with us and so the kids have been telling him all about their favorite parts.  They insist on watching it with him tonight so that he can see and understand for himself first hand what all the funny is about.  Luckily for them their Dad won’t mind because he is a huge Phineas and Ferb fan too – which I happen to notice that most Dads at the movie screening were super fans.

We had never been to a Radio Disney event before and it was really fun!  They had dancers, games, giveaways and tons of promotional gear.  My boys also scored a free pass to the aquarium in Newport which was a super bonus because we are planning a trip there next weekend.  When they boys got home they hung up their promotional movie posters on their bedroom walls and reveled in all the fun that they had at the premiere.

One of the funniest games that they played outside while everyone was waiting for the doors to open was Squirrels in My Pants.  Only a true Phineas and Ferb fan would appreciate the this game!  The kids were partnered up and one had to wear huge pants while the other aimed squirrels into them.  It was a lot of fun to watch and all the kids had a great time.  Lucky for you – I got it on video!

So don’t forget to tune in tonight and watch Phineas and Ferb Across the 2nd Dimension.  Remember it’s at 8 on the Disney Channel – check your local listings for the exact time for your area.

Have fun!

I Can’t Believe That #BlogHer11 is FINALLY Here!

OMG!!!  It’s here, BlogHer 2011 is finally here!  AKA – my mom vacation.

It seems like I have been counting down the days to this conference forever.  There are so many events to prepare for, so many friends to see and tons of companies to connect with.  It will be one of the highlights, if not the highlight of my summer.

This trip is full of firsts for me too.  My first major conference, my first time flying BY MYSELF anywhere, my first time meeting Steph from The Blue Zoo and Blue Violet from A Nut in a Nutshell, my first mom vacation and my first time time meeting so many companies in one place!

You would think I would have been packed and ready to go ages ago.  Nope.  I am a last minute packer all the way.  Let’s just say I work best under pressure.

Just an FYI that I won’t be able to post anything from BlogHer while I am gone because I am choosing to leave my laptop at home.  I just decided that without my personal luggage carrier, otherwise known as my husband, I am trying to limit what I have to carry on my person.  I will be tweeting a ton though so if you want to know what I’m up to just send me a tweet or read my twitter stream to keep updated on all the shenanigans.

In my absence I have a few posts lined up as well as a couple of guest posts so there will be lots to read while I am gone.  So my strolling loving, breastfeeding enthusiasts and movie review loving peeps – keep an eye out!

Well – I better get packing!  I can’t wait to share all the BlogHer fun with you when I get back!

Get Your #Groupon On With the BEST Hair Stylist in #Seattle

Like most of you ladies out there I need and love to have my hair done at my favorite salon, by my favorite hair stylist, at least every 6 months if I can.  When I find the time I try to make it no more than 4 months.  My natural hair requires lots of time and attention to get it looking the way that I prefer.  I have naturally curly, frizzy, boring brown hair.  I love to treat myself to a day of beauty but my hair is more of a necessity than a “treat”.  If it goes unkempt for too long I have damaged ends and serious grow out.  I need my hair foiled and trimmed on a regular basis or I start to look like a troll.  Not such a great look.

Every woman needs a hair stylist.  One that understands exactly what you need when you need it.  Having a regular hair stylist is imperative for several reasons.  Once you have  someone that regularly handles your hair they know exactly what you want without you even having to ask.  They get a feel for your personality and what suits your lifestyle.  Plus, they know how they cut and styled it the time before, most write down the formula, that way if you love it you can achieve the same look every time you visit.   If you don’t see a regular stylist or need a new one and live in the Seattle area do I have the girl for you!

I see Devona Hutsell at Salon Divas in Seattle off of 4th and Vine whenever my hair needs a pick me up.  Devona has been styling my hair for the last  14 years.  She has also styled my mom and several of my friends over the years as well.  Needless to say that I know her very well and can personally attest to the quality of her work.  Every time Devona styles my hair she creates the exact look that I want.  Each time I leave her chair I feel like a brand new woman!  In fact, I just had her cut and foil my hair the other day.  Here are the before and after pictures so you can see the magic that Devona worked on my frizzy head.

Beautiful right? Devona is a hair artist.  It’s her calling, she was BORN to do hair.  Speaking as one of her clients, as well as someone that has known her for many years, I know that Devona has an understanding of what’s hot in the hair industry and how to make it happen for you!  She is always on trend and knows how to make any head of hair look gorgeous.

I always leave the salon with a smile on my face.  What I love about Devona is that she is not the kind of hair stylist that tries to convince you that you look amazing.  She listens to what you want, she makes every effort to create exactly what you want and if for any reason you are unhappy she doesn’t let you leave her chair until you are happy.  Which is the most important quality in a hair stylist.  I think that we have all had that experience before when a stylist is trying to sell you on your hairstyle that they created for you.  You shouldn’t have to be sold – you should look in the mirror and feel gorgeous – if you don’t than you need a new hair stylist.

If you are in search of a Seattle hair stylist I can’t urge you enough to give Devona a try.  She has experience, education and a great personality.  Once you try her I know that you will LOVE what she can do for you.  And now for the scoop!

Devona is featured on Groupon today!

Today only Devona is offering a Groupon special for a women’s hair cut featured at half price!

Call Devona and make your appointment today!  You can reach her at Salon Divas at 206-256-0155.  This Groupon is good for today only and its a fantastic opportunity to try out Devona’s services at %50 percent off!

On Vacation – Finally! Having a Blast in Seattle

This week and next I will be in Seattle enjoying my vacation.  Seattle is my hometown and I am so happy to be back home with all of my friends and family for a couple of weeks.  I sure have missed them!!

While this is a personal trip its also a business trip for my husband.  We will be enjoying all the sights and tourist attractions courtesy of his company this week.  I’m really excited because all though I grew up here I have never really done any of the tourist attractions other than the Space Needle and Pike Place Market.

This week we will be riding the Duck, a land/boat tour, and doing the Underground Tour.  I have always wanted to do both of those activities so I can’t wait!  Of course I will be sure to share some great pictures of my Seattle expeditions.

Our second week here will be spent catching up with our family and friends.  We have only been in Oregon for 6 months but I sure do miss everyone and it will be so nice to see how they are all doing.

During my vacation in the Emerald City I will be posting here and there but to keep things fresh and exciting I will be featuring some other fabulous bloggers and their favorite product finds and crafts.  So please be sure to comment on their posts and give them some love by checking our their blogs too!

Ta ta for now!
