Eat Chocolate Every Day with Nutrisystem!

It’s not a secret that I love chocolate and I need a little chocolate boost to get me through the day sometimes.  One thing that I love about Nutrisystem is that if I wanted to I could have chocolate everyday.  Even I don’t need it that much – but it’s a great safety net for me just knowing that it’s okay to have a sweet treat everyday.  There are so many chocolate options available that I thought I would share some of my personal favorites with you.

The delicious dessert pictured above is the fudge brownie, its a favorite of both myself and my husband.  One thing that I really like about the desserts is the diversity.  There are cakes, brownies, ice cream, bars, chocolates and more.  If you want to see every dessert that Nutrisystem offers you can view their dessert menu.  If you don’t want to take my word for it that a dessert, or any other menu item for that matter, I mention is delicious you can see the ratings of the Nutrisystem community listed next to each dessert.  The ratings are based on a 5 star system so its very easy to tell right away what others think about that menu item.

Below are my favorite chocolate desserts
available on the Nutrisystem menu.

Yummy Alternatives That are Nutrisystem Friendly – Like This Portabello Mushroom Pizza!

I admit, sticking to Nutrisystem has been hard for me.  Not because of the plan though.  I have been going through many life changing events in the past six months and emotionally its just tough for me to handle all of it.  I am an emotional eater and when I feel bad I reward myself with food.  Comfort food, snacks, chocolate – all things that are fine in moderation but when I am depressed I go on overload.

This whole health scare with my brother-in-law has put things in a new perspective not only for me but for my husband as well.  For Mother’s Day the gift I asked for was for him to find a way to get our treadmill out of the garage and into our bedroom so that we can both start using it.  Not that I had a problem using it in my garage but since we moved the garage has been on our to-do list to get organized – and it doesn’t look like its gonna happen any time soon.  I didn’t want to wait for him to find the treadmill one day so bringing into my room was the only solution.  So now its ready to go and I can’t wait to get started with it.

Nutrisystem Friendly Recipes

One thing that I love about the Nutrisystem community is the alternative recipes that they offer.  I like to make my food fresh from scratch and not always stick to what is offered in the boxes.  For me, my favorite food is pizza.  I could eat it all day everyday.  I like to find new and interesting ways to eat it and if I can cut the calories while indulging I’m all for it.  I was so happy when I discovered a recipe for Portabello Mushroom Pizzas in the Nutrisystem Discussion Forum!

Recipe by SusieQ1982

Scoop out the centres of the mushrooms and place them on a baking tray. Top with pizza sauce, turkey pepperoni, your favourite veggies (I wouldn’t add more mushroom though!) and shredded cheese. Bake them for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is all melty and gooey. Be careful when you scoop them up with a spatula because the mushrooms get very soft and the toppings will really slide around if you’re not careful!

If you use 1/2 oz cheese and 1/2 serving of pepperoni, this counts as veggies, a free food, and a dairy/protein serving which means you could actually have this for an afternoon snack if you wanted (one fruit can be subbed for two veggie servings). How can you beat pizza for a snack? If you do want it as an entree though (it’s rather filling), remember to add a carb elsewhere to your day as well as a fat serving.

I love this recipe!  It is a great way to add more veggies and turkey pepperoni is so good, it tastes just like regular pepperoni.

The only contribution to this recipe that I would make is that I would bake the mushroom by itself for a few minutes, then take it out and add all the sauce and the toppings.  If you skip this step the mushrooms can be a bit watery, which is noticeable when you take a bite.  Other than that though this is a recipe that I could eat as a SNACK!  Believe me, one is very filling – two would be a complete meal and you would be totally full.

My best friend makes a variation of this recipe by using sliced baby tomatoes instead of pizza sauce.  She also uses feta cheese instead of mozzarella.  She loves this particular combo.  The great thing about these pizzas is that they could be made to order in several different ways and still be a totally healthy snack or dinner.  Gotta love the versatility!

Kale Chips and Salsa

I could eat chips and salsa day and night, next to pizza it is my next biggest vice.  Now the salsa is good for you, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos are all great veggies.  It’s the tortilla chips that kill you.  For a very long time I have been looking for a tortilla chip substitute.

I had heard of using kale chips from my best friend but to be honest it sounded kind of gross.  So I searched the Nutrisystem forum to get more info and sure enough there were several members that had tried it and liked it! They are super easy to make and ready in minutes.

Ingredients
2 cups fresh kale leaves
Olive oil nonstick spray
Dash salt, or more to taste

Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Place kale leaves on a baking sheet sprayed with olive oil nonstick spray. Spritz leaves with the nonstick spray and sprinkle with salt.

Bake in the oven until crispy, 5 – 8 minutes, for a potato-chip-like snack.

If you like, season to taste with additional salt. Eat up!

MAKES 1 SERVING

Pair it with your favorite salsa or pico de gallo and you have an all veggie delicious snack!

I tried it with both and it was really good.  Obviously it’s not as tasty as chips but its a great substitute that you don’t have to feel guilty about.  The only advice I have is that you need a spoon to lay on the salsa because the kale chips are very thin and could break in the actual dipping process.  It really just depends on how chunky or thin you like your salsa to be.

Do You Need Motivation to Reach Your Weight Loss Goals? Read Inspiring Stories and More at Nutrisystem .com

Sometimes when you are doing your best to stay on track with losing weight it can be hard to stay motivated.  I know that during my unexpected move a couple of months ago that was certainly the case with me.  Going through the move, and then finally settling in a new town without friends or family near by, certainly took a toll on my motivations.  I was depressed, over eating and just struggling to get by with my new daily routine.  I never stopped eating the Nutrisystem food I just didn’t follow the plan with the added fruits and vegetables.  Plus there were several road trips back and forth between the two states and that didn’t help things much either.

All though this has been a difficult process for me I am proud to say that I am steadily taking the weight off again.  I am being careful about every bite I eat and making sure to drink water everyday.  One of my biggest vices was soda pop.  I haven’t kicked the habit completely but I have set restrictions for myself that I stick to.  During the week I only drink Diet Dr Pepper Cherry because it has a sweet taste but has 0 calories.  I only let myself indulge on Saturday nights and all day Sunday.  I couldn’t quit cold turkey and knowing that I can have that reward on the weekends really helps me get through the weekdays.

Anyhow, I have since lost 6 lbs in the last three weeks sticking to my Nutrisystem plan.  I am back!  I am now motivated more than ever to reach my weight loss goal.  For me its not a matter of if I will do it but when.  I know that my life will not always be stuck in this body and I am ready to make the positive changes towards reaching my goal.
That’s not to say that I don’t have a bad day here and there where I need extra motivation and inspiration.  Cause I do.  When I need that gentle reminder of what I am working towards I visit Nutrisystem.com and read the inspiring weight loss success stories of those that have stuck with the program and reached their goals.  I always feel better when I see those that have been where I am now and seeing that they made that change makes all the difference in my attitude on those days when I am struggling with myself.

Their encouraging stories are great reads if you need that extra push this week.  The great thing about the Nutrisystem Community is that no matter what your weight loss goal they have success stories from across the board!  You can select to read only about the people in your weight loss category or branch out and be inspired by those that had a whole lot more to lose than you.  These uplifting stories are a great tool offered by the program and a testament to the Nutrisystem family.

You never know…. one day it could be you sharing your story and inspiring others to take charge of their weight loss and nutrition goals.

Nutrisystem Select Frozen Foods are SO Yummy!

I have been really loving the Nutrisystem App that I downloaded a couple of weeks ago!  This last week I lost 1.5 lbs by tracking what I ate and drank.  A huge plus to the app is that it tracks your calorie intake as well.  Which is something that is lacking from the hand written food journal.  I suppose that I could have added the calories up myself but its just so much nicer when an app does it for you!  I know for me a good caloric range to stay in so its really helpful for me to know the calories in addition to staying on track with the program.

I have really been loving the frozen foods that Nutrisystem offers.  They are so GOOD!  Awhile back I shared with you my favorite frozen breakfast so this week I thought that I would share my favorite frozen dinner entree.  For me, I love the Turkey Pepperoni Pizza.  Its something to do with the crust.  Even though I heat in the microwave its still crispy and delicious.  I could literally eat one of these pizzas everyday.  They are that delicious!

One area that I have to work hard at in the Nutrisystem plan is my water intake.  I love how on the app you can check off the glasses of water as you drink them throughout the day.  Drinking enough water is really important for weight loss and I know that its an area for me that has required some major improvement.  At Nutrisystem you can purchase a Nutrisystem Sports Water Bottle and if you power through it two times in one day it means that you have met your water intake for the day.  I really like that aspect of it because when you can take a task that seems so daunting, like drinking eight glasses of water, its nice to have it minimized into two portions.  Check it out for yourself!

I know that I have so much more work to do towards my weight loss goals but I believe that utilizing the tools that Nutrisytem offers will help me in leaps and bounds.  Until next week my friends…

Nutrisystem Update!

It’s been awhile since I have written a post about my journey with Nutrisystem.  As you may know, with the move, all the weekend road trips back and forth plus my own issues of clutter and chaos within our new home, I didn’t have much time to blog.  In addition to that I was eating Nutrisystem on an irregular basis.  Not the way that I was prior to the move.  I am still finding my bearings here with regards to the Nutrisystem food plan.

Let me explain what I mean by that.  First off, I absolutely LOVE the new frozen food line!  Oscar and I both really enjoy all the meals available to us.  One of the key components of the Nutrisystem plan is supplementing the foods with fresh fruits and veggies.  Before we moved I shopped at the farm stand by my home once a week for the fresh ingredients that I was going to use.  I really liked the prices and the produce that was available.  The grocery store by my home was much more expensive and I had experienced problems with product freshness in the past.  Needless to say, I really enjoyed the routine I had in place.

In our new town, it’s very small and the nearest farm stand is about 35 minutes from our house.  Which means that I am limited to what is offered at the grocery store close to our house.  Luckily this grocery store has fresher produce but on the downside the selection is limited.  So while we had been eating the Nutrisystem meals we didn’t have the fresh fruits and veggies to pair them with most of the time.  I finally started shopping regularly and finding a good routine towards the end of February.

I am really excited to be getting back on track with Nutrisystem.  During the moving process Oscar and I both got off track.  I found out that Oscar was eating two of the freezer food meals at a time when I wasn’t around!  I am also learning to deal with my emotional eating habits.  This move has been hard to deal with to say the least and I realized that I was snacking more than I should have to compensate for my feelings of depression regarding our move.  I have felt so much guilt about it and I am ready to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.  I have one month left on the program and I intend to make the most of it.

As per the usual I will be giving my updates on the weekends and I will also be bringing you some great information about the food, the program and the products available for Nutrisystem community members.  For example during my hiatus from blogging I purchased an iPod Touch and downloaded the Nutrisystem App.  I love it!  It’s so much easier than writing everything down in the journal plus it counts the calories too!  Check it out:

What Do You Like to Eat For Breakfast? I bet Nutrisystem has your favorites!!

I have to say that I LOVE the breakfasts that Nutrisystem has to offer.  It is my absolute favorite meal of the day!  They have a ton of options between the pantry and the gourmet fresh frozen selections.  I have really been enjoying the new frozen options for breakfast.  My favorite pick so far hands down is the breakfast burrito.  It has a bit of a spicy kick to it which is why I think that it has been my favorite frozen breakfast so far.  If I were to make a breakfast burrito – this is what I would want it to taste like.  This one is Oscar’s favorite breakfast option too.

Yummy!

The frozen breakfast options are delicious and they work out great for Oscar’s lunch too.  With the pantry foods he couldn’t easily prepare pancakes at work so having hot breakfast wasn’t really an option for him before.  Now he can have an omelet, a breakfast burrito, pancakes or even french toast!  I know that he really appreciates having these extra options.

Even before I started getting the frozen items breakfast was still my favorite meal of the day.  I love making my own blueberry pancakes.  I eat some fresh fruit and some turkey bacon or a glass of milk and I am ready to get the day started!  I was eating the blueberry pancakes pretty much everyday until my schedule got a bit out of whack and then I didn’t have time to make breakfast.  Then I got really hooked on the Chocolate Chip Scone.  So much so, that it was all that ordered for breakfast in my last order!  I love taking this and an apple with me in the car when I am in a hurry but super hungry and didn’t have time to fix breakfast.

Oscar and I have pretty different tastes and his favorite pantry breakfast is the Banana Nut Muffin.  I like it too but I usually go for the chocolate muffin myself.  The Banana Nut Muffin was one of the first items that Oscar tried on the Nutrisystem plan and he was so surprised by the fact that it tasted so good.  Of course I just laughed because I had been telling him for weeks that the muffins and breakfast items were really tasty.  Its funny how no one believes you until they try it for themselves!

So what is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?  I am willing to bet that Nutrisystem has something that you will absolutely love.  There are so many great options I could go on all day but you should really just go check out the menu for yourself!  As always, if you have any questions about my experience with Nutrisystem or how the food tastes just ask me, I am glad to help you in your weight loss journey.  Let’s lose the weight together!

HOORAY YOU! THE NUTRISYSTEM “NEW YOU REVOLUTION” BRINGS FRESH FROZEN FOOD TO ALL

HOORAY YOU! THE NUTRISYSTEM “NEW YOU REVOLUTION” BRINGS FRESH FROZEN FOOD TO ALL

I hope that everyone had a fantastic Christmas, I know I did!  Now its time to get amped for the New Year and all the fun stuff that goes with it.  Most people, myself included, like to think of the New Year as a fresh start.  Wipe the slate clean and make some much needed changes.  I love starting things with a fresh perspective each year I am eager to make the necessary changes for a better and brighter tomorrow.

This year will be little different for me.  You see I all ready started my journey to a healthier me a few months ago with Nutrisystem.  Then to make things a bit easier for me to stick with the program and avoid temptations my husband Oscar joined me on my weightloss journey with Nutrisystem in November.  We were doing great together until a snow storm hit and our entire schedule when out of control – followed by Thanksgiving and Christmas we just never got back to what we had intact.  We were still eating Nutrisystem but not as many meals as often or in conjunction with the all the fruits and veggies.  Time was short so both of us were only eating a couple of meals a day by themselves and if we were out and about running errands fast food got the better of us.  Both of us will be making the change back to our Nutrisystem lifestyle starting the first week of January.  And we are SO looking forward to it!

In December we started receiving Nutrisystem Select’s fresh frozen gourmet meals in addition to some of the shelf food.  Let me tell you, the frozen food is DE. LIC. OUS!  I love it!  Everything can be microwaved, or reheated in the oven which makes for some fast, simple good eatin’!  One thing that I love about the frozen breakfasts for Oscar is that he can now enjoy pancakes and french toast in the breakfast that I pack for him.  Before he was limited to only muffins and bars for breakfast during the week because he didn’t have the means or the time to make pancakes at work like I did at home.  I love the variety of the mixing the frozen with the shelf food because it really opened up the options for me for lunch and dinner.

Oh and the desserts!  Ice cream, fudge bars and ice cream sandwiches – that’s what I’M talking about.  I like these dessert options SO much better than the shelf.  I mean don’t get me wrong chocolate bars, candies and cookies are still good to but we are huge ice cream fans in our house and it is hands down our favorite type of dessert.

GUESS WHAT?  Nutrisystem has lowered their prices and decided to include frozen food in the new Nutrisystem 28-day program. It will now include one-third frozen foods and two-thirds of pantry foods! So you can find out all the great details about what is in store for Nutrisystem in 2011 by reading the press release the below:

Press Release from Nutrisystem
Nutrisystem, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI), the number one home delivery weight loss company, announced today that it is revamping its programs by incorporating its highest scoring, best tasting fresh frozen gourmet foods into all of its weight loss plans at the lowest price in the Company’s history. Part of Nutrisystem’s “Hooray You! New You Revolution” initiative is to empower and celebrate the success of its members, and with these significant changes it will make Nutrisystem® weight loss programs more accessible to a wider audience than ever before. The new Nutrisystem 28-day program will now include one-third frozen foods and two-thirds of pantry foods. Additionally, the program previously cost $399 per month and it will now cost $299, including an additional free week of pantry foods, a gourmet money back guarantee and free shipping. “The launch of this program is a groundbreaking accomplishment for our team. Nutrisystem has now found a way to do what no other weight loss company had been able to do – and that is to provide home delivery of fresh-frozen foods at the lowest price in the category,” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem. “We spent the better part of the last year conducting extensive category research and, of course, listening to our own customers. The message we heard was clear and simple – they want great tasting, high quality foods at a low price with no gimmicks and no complicated plans. Through this system wide revamp I’m truly pleased that we’ll now be providing just that.”
Added Redling, “This winter season, many weight loss companies are launching new programs. We applaud those who are working hard in the fight to combat the national obesity epidemic but warn consumers to be wary of the newest fads and magic pill solutions. At Nutrisystem, our program is backed by the science of the low Glycemic Index and at a low price. We believe the solution to a healthier lifestyle can be just that simple.”

“As the nation continues to spiral into an ever-worsening cycle of obesity, we’re taking action now that will make our weight loss programs more accessible to more Americans than ever before. When crafting this new program, we recognized that the barriers to dieting and the reasons why people fail often comes down to a matter of cost, convenience and eating foods that taste good,” said Dr. Bruce Daggy, Vice President of Research and Development of Nutrisystem. “Feedback from our members has always given the highest food ratings to our frozen foods, but cost has been a barrier. One of the most important aspects of our programs that will continue is our adherence to a balanced diet based on the low Glycemic Index. We recognize that weight loss and health is not just about counting calories. Our focus remains to support a sensible and sustainable approach to eating.”

Holiday Survival Smarts Diet-friendly Strategies for The Holiday Season and Beyond

I was sent some awesome tips and healthy eating advice from my Nutrisystem friend/counselor.  These tips can be extremely useful for those of us that are trying to make it through this holiday week by eating smart.  It’s all about moderation and portion control, even when you feel like stuffing your face with some pumpkin pie.  If you have any other tips for staying on track during the holidays please share them in the comments section at the bottom of the post.  The more help the better!

Holiday Survival Smarts
Diet-friendly Strategies for The Holiday Season and Beyond
1. Have a plan.  Think things through before you get to the actual holiday meals and parties. Maybe your strategy is to take tiny portions of different dishes; that’s okay. If you’re cooking, you might want to have your bottle of water with you in the kitchen, so you’re less tempted to snack. Do what you can to stay away from the appetizer table. Plan to avoid anything that’s not homemade. The point is that if you go in with a plan, you’ll be less likely to get caught off-guard.
2. Stay on track. Holidays are not the time to skip meals in an attempt to “bank” calories. That’s a strategy that can backfire miserably. Instead, eat everything on your meal plan leading up to the holiday event, and make sure you’re drinking all your water. You’ll be less likely to overindulge at the big event.
3. Set a goal. There’s something about holidays that makes people forget what they do the rest of the year. Do you already have weight loss goals set up for November, December and January? If not you can start today. Once you’ve set a short-term goal, decide on a way to reward yourself once the goal has been reached.
4. Drink smart. Face it, overindulging during holiday events—whether it’s an office party, a family gathering or a neighborhood open house—can add a lot of extra calories to your day. In addition, when you’ve had too much to drink, it tends to weaken your previous resolve and derail any strategies and plans you might have had. Besides, you don’t want to end up as that karaoke-singing family member or neighbor everyone will be talking about for the next month.
5. Trim the calories.  This tip is especially useful if you happen to be the primary cook for an event. In baked items, replace the fat with an equal amount of applesauce and the sugar with a sugar substitute; substitute a quarter cup of egg substitute for every egg called for in the recipe; replace whole milk with 1% milk and sour cream with yogurt; reduce the amount of nuts called for by half. And don’t forget both veggies and salad.
6. Enlist support. Trying to maintain your Nutrisystem program can be hard at the holidays, but there’s no reason you have to go it alone. Ask for your family’s understanding or even their help, so nobody’s trying to foist “seconds” on you. Nutrisystem counselors can help you strategize, based on your individual circumstances. Or you can go to the Nutrisystem Discussion Boards, where you’ll find people who definitely understand what you’re trying to do. Discuss your concerns; share tips of your own, or join one of the many weight loss challenges. Some of them are specifically geared to the holidays. Introduce yourself well before the event, so you have that support already in place.
7. Keep moving. Instead of just sitting around after dinner, suggest a family walk, or organize a touch-football game. Most people will be grateful for the chance to move around, and it can keep you on-track with your exercise plan.
8. Embrace the spirit.  This last tip may just be the most important: You can get so caught up in all the planning and hoopla that you lose the whole meaning of the holiday season—coming together with friends and loved ones. It’s the time that’s really valuable, not the food and drink.
Remember: Quality not Quantity
If you do plan to indulge in some of the traditional Thanksgiving favorites, use these portions as a guideline:
Turkey—3 oz. white meat, no skin (about the size of a deck of cards)
Mashed potatoes—1/3 cup (about the size of half of a baseball)
Gravy—1 Tbsp. (just drizzle it)
Relish made with sugar—1 Tbsp.
Stuffing—2 Tbsp.
Dinner Roll—if not homemade, skip it
Pie—1/12 of a 9” pie
